Theme: Epiphyte
The relationship between art and architecture and art and landscape is a theme in my practice. Much of my commissioned work, for example, Pollinator Phenotype and Arborescence directly explore this relationship. An epiphyte is a plant that lives with host plant in a state of symbiosis. Epiphytes such as Cactal and Efflorescence 2007 address the historic relationship between sculpture, ornament and architecture.
Efflorescence and Proximities ask how organic form is appropriated by the vegetal motifs of ethographic art styles. My epiphytes play with their host buildings and streets, challenging some of the assumptions behind the built environment, seeking to reveal hidden historical and contextual meanings and processes of the site within which they find themselves.
